Students join instructor Chehala in a real-time experiment to test their skills at building a cozy nest. Just in time for baby bird season, participants will explore the insulating properties of nest materials by creating their own small nest and testing its success in keeping their ice cube "alive" and chilly. Build two nests to compare them, or explore the nests others make during the session. Building a bird nest is harder than it looks! Students will leave with increased appreciation for birds' difficult springtime work and the inspiration to form and test other hypotheses about insulation and conduction.
Participants will need access to the following materials to complete their experiment:
- Insulating materials - natural materials from outside or materials from around the house, or both
- 2 plastic sandwich bags
- 2 ice cubes
This activity addresses heat and energy transfer as described in NC Standard Couse of Study science objectives 5.P.3.1 and 5.P.3.2.
